Where on Chromosome is Problem?

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is caused by a mutation of at least one of several genes that effect collagen production. A mutation in the following genes could cause Ehlers-Danlos syndrome: ADAMTS2, COL1A1, COL1A2, COL3A1, COL5A1, COL5A2, PLOD1, and TNXB.
For example, lets take COL1A1 gene (collagen, type 1, alpha 1) found of the 17th chromosome. During the development of a zygote this gene somehow is altered. When this gene is altered it leads to the production of a procollagen chain that is missing an important segment. This critical segment will skew the assembly and structure of collagen molecules and the processing of them.

What Is the Problem?

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a disorder that effects the bodies connective tissue. Connective tissue is extremely common throughout the body, meaning that this disorder effects your skin, bones, blood vessels, as well as other organs.
Ehlers-Danlos syndrome has several recognized types and the effects can range from extra flexibility in the joints to serious health complications depending on which organs are affected.
The most serious of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is the vascular and kyphoscoliosis types. Both warn that there is an increase chance that blood vessels could tear leading to shock or a stroke. The vascular type of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome specifically associated with the increased risk of organ rupture (ie. intestine and uterus). The kyphoscoliosis form of Ehlers-Danlos are prone to severe, progressive curvature of the spine.

What is the Prognosis?

Almost every case of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is different somehow so there is no definitive prognosis necessarily. For those with the vascular type of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome ones life expectancy can be significantly shortened due to the possibility of vital organs rupturing. But for those who have other types of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome tend not to be in a life threatening state.
